PROJECTS INVOLVING PEOPLE OR ANIMALS
Human and animal ethics
Any students doing any investigations which involve
humans or animals must complete an ethics form. All
such investigations must gain ethics approval before
they start or they can not be considered for an award at
the regional fair. Having the students consider if they need to apply for
ethics approval for their investigation is a good learning
process. For those students who do fill out an ethics form
it will help them look more carefully at how they should
carry out their investigation.
The completed form should be given to the supervising
teacher who should send or fax the form to

Don't forget to keep a copy
In general any research that involves bodily fluids,
ingesting of material, applying anything to the body, or
recording personal information, will require full ethics
approval.
Ethics exemption may be granted by the Nelson
Marlborough Ethics Committee if risks are minimal ie.
adverse effects are very small and the chance of them
occurring is very low. eg. having subjects exert themselves as they would during a
normal day.
or. asking for information that would normally be
volunteered during an ordinary conversation.
Each student using human subjects must complete the
project information sheet for subjects and parents to
ensure they are fully aware of the nature of the study and
any risks they themselves may be exposed to. If they agree to take part in the investigation they or
their parent (if they are under 16) must sign the consent
form.
The student must keep all consent forms and display their
ethics approval or exemption forms for judges to see. (For
forms click here). |
